Splice - Goffen

The Rock

This is a spliced beam on the boathouse on the rock. I really admire the workmanship the old ones posessed. As you maybe can see under it it's locked in all directions.

Another great shot of workmanship. I don't know if I've ever seen joints in a building quite like these. Very interesting. My father did carpentry when I was younger and built a lot of the house I grew up in. So, I think I get the love for wood and how it is put together from him.

Ah! Now I see - 2 interlocked beams, not 4. Those are cracks in the beams not cuts. I was wondering why it did not fall. It is amazing that the beams have not split - they must have cut the beams so the grain is not all parallel to the ceiling (or floor)? With particle board and laminated woods all the ways of building barns and constructions like this without nails will soon be forgotten.

When I was a kid, we had wooden puzzles where the pieces had locking angles and corners and edges like this, and it all fit together just one way. Hahahaha, I was lousy at solving them - you probably don't want me working on your house! Thanks for the memory.

And that peg holds it all together... They built to last, but they also built things that be taken apart w/o destroying them
