Radruz

East Roztocze, Poland

Polychromy in the chancel, painted directly on wood in 1648, probably by painters Michal Pieczonko and Jaroslaw Wiszenko.

The Orthodox Church of Saint Paraskevi in Radruz, built in XVI century (probably in 1580).

One of the oldest and best preserved wooden church in Poland. It was built with high quality fir and oak wood by a professional carpenter's workshop. The founder member of the church was probably Jan Plaza, the parliament member and mayor of Lubaczow (died in 1599). During the troubled times of the seventeenth century church - apart from religious functions - served as fortress, where residents can take refuge during the Tartar invasions.

It is hard to believe this painting could last that long on a piece of wood. Nice capture! V
