Egretta ardesiaca, Black Heron

Marakissa, Gambia

If the quick wading action in itself is insufficient, additional foot-stirring under the canopy may follow to dislodge food for young Tilapia, which would then react by entering the canopy. Apart from the advantage of cutting out reflections, the canopy finally enables the egret to discern immediately any prey entering the canopy from the surrounding lighted water.
