Egretta ardesiaca, Black Heron

Saré Yoba, Casamance, Senegal

Foot-stirring involves deliberate disturbance and can hardly induce prey to move towards the centre of disturbance. Moreover, Black Egrets are often seen hunting near water-lilies, whose leaves cast as many available shadows. Possibly frightened fish would rather take shelter under the lily-leaves, even before the canopy-formation, because of the quick wading action of the egret. (see next photos)
