It was up this hill and to the right that Longstreet's troops attempted to climb on the afternoon of July 2nd. The murderous opposition was from four Union regiments, the left-most of the defensive line being the 20th Maine Infantry under Colonel Chamberlain. Attack after attack was repulsed until the Maine troops were almost out of ammunition. It was then that Chamberlain ordered "Bayonets!" and his troops charged down the body-strewn hill with fixed bayonets and, finally, the Confederates retreated. This battle has been effectively recreated in the movie, Gettysburg, featuring Jeff Daniels as Chamberlain.
