Male
Celeus flavescens ochraceus
Barra do Garças, Mato Grosso
This form is arguably even more lovely, and very well differentiated from, the nominate that is found in the Atlantic Forest, where it is mainly confined to Brazil. We had numerous encounters with this taxon during our trip and during our searches for the recently rediscovered Kaempfer's Woodpecker C. obrieni in central Tocantins, there was many a false alarm, for, as we discovered, this bird will also respond to playback of the male vocalisation of C. obrieni. Eventually, we struck lucky with obrieni, but it helps also to have the very distinctive female vocalisation of the latter species: thanks to Advaldo Prado, this is now available on the xeno-canto.org website.
