Dolaucothi Gold Mine.

Dolaucothi Gold Mine,Carmathenshire,Wales. view map

A mining train, loaded with rock,to demonstrate how much quarrying had to be done to extract the gold. The train is carrying approxiamately 10 tons of rock.Just one wagon contains ore which has gold in it.From that one wagon there might be 1 kilo of gold;maybe if you're lucky. The Romans were here from 74AD until about 126AD using mostly open cast mining. It has been estimated that they removed half a hillside, about 5.5 million tons of rock,in that time,to extract just 1.5 tons of gold.

At a value of over £24,000 a kilo, maybe worth doing
