As Auks realise their eggs are addled they desert them and the Herring Gulls devour them with relish. They are easy meals for them now not having to fight with the parent birds. Young chicks too are easier prey now that the auk numbers are decreasing and taken in numbers when the isolated parent birds leave to get food.
