This was built on the site of the Millbank Penitentery,where prisoners were kept until they were transported to Australia,often for minor offences.That stopped in 1842 when gold was discovered in aus and people were commiting crimes just to get a free passage to a new life.The Morpeth Arms pub just up the road from here has in it's basement one of the cells from the prison.
