Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, 2010

The third image in this series of vertical thrusts is a long vertical trail of brilliantly colored calcified rock that characterizes the stunning beauty of the Grand Prismatic Spring. The largest hot spring in the United States, it is known for its vivid colors, the result of pigmented bacteria in the microbial mats that grow around the edges of mineral-rich water. The color varies by season, and with the coming of spring, the orange and red colors replace the winter mats of dark green.

Grand Prismatic Spring lends itself to shape and color perfectly -- I agree with you, Iris -- it is one of Yellowstone's most spectacular sights and particularly lends itself to wideangle photographs such as this.

One of my favorite places in Yellowstone and this image expresses the reason why. This is a stunning trail of magnificent color that leads the eye to an unknown place. Very surreal, indeed.

It does look like a surreal landscape -- in fact, Yellowstone itself is a very surreal place. There just nothing else like it, at least here in the US. Thanks, Rose.

Fascinating abstract, like an aerial photo, or an alien landscape from Mars.
