decoration day

Findlay, OHIO

When I was young my mother and grandmother would cut flowers around the house and load them up in the '55 Pontiac along with assorted Mason jars, tin cans and tin foil. They would then go to cemeteries in Vanceburg and Maysville (KY) and decorate all the family graves. Absolutely nothing was store-bought. This morning I cut flowers around my house and went to an old cemetery nearby to decorate a grave. There has not been a burial in this cemetery in 100 years. Upon arrival I noticed there were no graves decorated . . . not a single grave. I selected a headstone near the center of the cemetery and left this behind to "decorate" all the graves . . . the old fashioned way.

By Decoration Day all the monuments had been cut and set.

Good for you, Frank. There may not be anyone left. The old customs are quickly dying and people think that Memorial Day is the day for barbecues and picnics. They have forgotten the meaning of "Honoring those who gave their all for their country."
I love the peonies--they really remind me of Memorial Day.
