"Europe's last wild river" is how the French describe the Loire, their longest river, which flows for just over 1000km from its source in the mountains of the Ardeche to its estuary at St Nazaire on the Atlantic.
Filled with wooded islands and sandbanks, the river appears calm, sluggish and often rather short of water.
