"Sharp-tails" are very furtive most of the time, but for the few days that they are establishing territories and showing off for potential mates, they are a bit easier to see. Today there were a number of birds and I was able to get enough shots to get a good one!
On seeing this photo, originally posted as a "Sharp-tailed Sparrow", Jeremiah Trimble asked if other shots might help discern whether this is a Nelson's or a Saltmarsh Sparrow. Having forgotten that my old friend the "Sharp-tailed Sparrow" is now split into two species, I realized that I hadn't checked. Looking at other photos of the birds (one of which follows) I was able to determine, with Jeremiah's confirmation, that these were Nelson's Sparrows. Apparently their spring presence in this area isn't well documented so these pix may prove helpful to the experts. It's fun when things work out that way!
