When I first moved to Shanghai these houses, directly behind where I lived, were home to a thriving community some of whom had lived in their homes for generations. Sadly, the land is now worth far more to developers and the people are moved to satellite towns in the suburbs to make way for the wrecking ball.
For the stubborn who stay behind, holding out for more money, or to their history, homes are demolished around them until only their homes are left standing. They find themselves living in a dereliction zone.
