I processed the RAW file 3 times in Capture One, first as exposed, second to bring out detail in the overexposed stones, and third +1 EC to allow for a layer to add some light to the shadows.
In CS3 I copied the dark and pasted to the medium, made a layer mask and painted away using various brushes to get the overexposed areas back. Then flattened this and cut and paste it over the bright layer. Using various brushes again, I lightened some shadow areas to add texture and depth to them.
Then I cropped the image for a more (IMHO) pleasing composition.
Then, masked the midtones and used SmartSharpen at 15%, 250px radius to increase the local contrast. Used the rectangle marquee tool to select the edges, inverted the selection and feathered 250 pixels. Used a curve pulled down in the middle to darken the vignette then decreased the saturation -25 on the same selection.
Flattened image, sized to 800px high, made a layer with a mask, sharpened with SmartSharpen at 40% 0.3px, painted the mask at 50% opacity around the edges to soften them yet keep the subject of the image sharp.
