.
The hand painted fleur de lis design is a period decoration. The design was common in French colonial communities such as New Orleans
and Louisville. The adjoining county to Nicholas is Bourbon, next to Fayette. Kentucky County, Virginia was originally divided into
three counties: Fayette to the east, Jefferson to the west and Lincoln to the south. A map can be seen here http://www.pbase.com/jtsmall/image/122291049

The chimney that forms the wall in the rear of this photo, was partially collapsed at the start of the renovation. The original bricks had been
manufactured on site. Replacement bricks were manufactured by matching the original and the chimney restored. The result can
be seen in this earlier photo http://www.pbase.com/jtsmall/image/101049768 One can make out the 'V' shape formed by the
original bricks and morter with the portion inside the V and above being the replacements.
