6th - Universal Suffrage

Cheltenham, Glos.

Well, here it is, the day we've been waiting for...the chance to exercise our democratic right to elect the Government

Cheltenham is the sixth most marginal seat in the UK and one of the top ten LibDem/Tory battlegrounds in the country with only 0.7% separating the two at the 2005 general election. Correspondingly we've been bombarded with doorstep canvassing and oodles of flyers and pamphlets from these two parties for the past four weeks. Disappointingly but understandable given the above, the Labour Party have been conspicuous by its complete absence from the hustings here - yes, there's the odd 'Vote Labour' sticker in a window to be seen across town but they seem to be token gestures at best.

But it's all good fun of course - it's SO satisfying to flummox a party brown-nose by just resolutely refusing to see their PoV and to keep asking them for the figures and sums which explain how their party will get the UK out of the current debt :o) Ooooo, I am awful :o))

Ultimately, like most things however, the election itself will soon be forgotten and all its paraphernalia will be flushed down the drain like so much other disposable-ness. Forgive me for sounding like a political cynic - I'm not (the scandal over MPs' expenses aside, and the seemingly unbridled and rabid right-wing print and broadcast media bias which has been much in evidence this spring) but I do wonder at the seemingly vast financial resources the main political parties can afford to mobilise in the chase for No. 10

Ah well, good luck to whoever it is...they'll certainly need it!

"Politicking" is big business. They spend a fortune on advertising and then they spend a fortune when elected. Wasteful and superficial, I say. Nice commentary, Doug!!

I don't think anyone can avoid cynicism these days. We have great TV coverage of your elections, yet our pollies seem to be bumbling along in much the same way. You would think with such large national debts there would be some brownie points in saving on advertising materials. Perhaps that's what labour is doing. A great way to illustrate your point .... well done.

A great "story" photo. You are viciousness asking those questions. :)

Money will always be found for the wrong reasons, especially in politics!!

I'm like Steve S there's one party that's a lot nastier than the other two so i had to do my bit in an effort to keep them out.

Great image, well placed with the symbolic drain and you're right on with commentary Doug.
We too have a Gubernatorial election coming up in California in November. At the moment most of the bickering and negative campaign ads are on TV. (I hope it is not shown on the Channel that shows the World Cup. Go Germany, by the way.) Soon there will be signs everywhere and the mailbox will have daily doses of fliers telling us why we should not vote for certain candidates. All this makes for a very negative political climate and most people that I know are very disillusioned by the process and by the people participating in it as candidates. Despite all this Democracy is still much better than what the generations before mine experienced in Germany, so Mrs. Amoxtli and I vote every election and I hope you and all PBasers who can do too.

Good image and commentary, just wish we had an election due ....

I just wonder which ones will be surprised to find themselves out of work tomorrow, I will feel so sorry for them!

I have been gobsmacked at the sheer volume of roadside placards this year, often one every 50 yards or so, on both sides of the road, for a good few miles (mostly blue). Like *anyone* is going to think 'ooh, I didn't know what to do but now I've seen lots of placards for them, I think I'll vote for them too'.... actually, thinking about it, never underestimate the stupidity of some folk ;) I have little time for the self-serving t&##@$s, but have just cast my vote as there are one particular lot of self-serving t&##@$s I dislike more than the others and have to do my bit to ensure they don't get in :)

Even the French are watching - the election has just made the main evening news here. I'm glad in a way I don't have to chose because I really would find it very difficult...'Fraid I wont be staying up all night.

I, whatever will be will be. The thought of one of the major parties just not bothering is a strange concept. I live in a constituency where people vote Red because they just couldn't ever vote Blue, but this time around with three in the running it will be a close call.

They should all be made to pay an additional recycling tax for all the crap they push through your door to all say and do the same thing, grewat PAD idea for today by the way.

Democracy - the least worst way of running a country. Just imagine the alternatives. I must go and vote.
