There has been a church on this site for over a thousand years, although the building here today has been much altered and extended over the centuries. The north chancel wall is 12th century, the nave dates from the 14th century and the church was further enlarged in 1661. The sandstone cladding was applied during the 1850s to all of the building exterior except the north wall, and the previous squat tower was replaced by the elegant shingled spire which now adorns the building.
