The lodge we were staying for the first night is located at the foothills of Mount Meru.
It is an active stratovolcano located 70 kilometres (43 mi) west of Mount Kilimanjaro.
It is the second-highest peak in Tanzania and the fifth highest in Africa - 4,566 metres (14,980 ft).
