20100412 456 Cooper's Hawk SERIES.jpg

Mud Lake, Ottawa

Two versions of the same image of a Cooper's Hawk taking a bath. The shot was taken with the Hawk between me and the sun. Note all the sun spots in the second image which is as shot except for some contrast, sharpening and cropping adjustments.

In the top image I've tried to eliminate the white dots by darkening and blurring the affected areas of the top image. I also brightened up the Hawk some to make it stand out more.

Either version seems very good to me, though the hawk is certainly more of a standout in the top version. The highlighted region behind the hawk's tail is a distraction and I can see why you want to dampen it.

Simply amazing captures,Hank. I would feel fortunate to photograph a Coopers hawk but to catch one taking a bath is just amazing!
