Those gables on the buildings (from 1600's) are all housing the large wheels for the manually operated cranes. A large wheel with a loop of rope trough holes in all the floors, and on the same (relatively thin) axle a rope for hoisting stuff (mostly dried fish) from the boats. Bergen still have quite a few of these buildings standing.

This is Sandviksboder Coast Culture Center which houses a lot of activities to preserve old boats etc www.kystkulturbergen.no shows the area from the air
