Carol Wilcox Lifetime Achievement Award

Jim Murphy and Mike McGlenn present Carol's award

Nomination Carol's Life Time Achievement Award written by Jim Murphy

Carol Wilcox had an important role in the early years of Backcountry Horsemen of Washington, as important as any member I know! I first met Carol during the early formation of Backcountry Horsemen, at a camp out and garbage pack out at Timothy Meadows on the Little Naches River in 1976. During that campout, we had the first summer meeting of Backcountry Horsemen of Washington, where Carol was elected secretary/treasurer. It was a natural fit with husband Ken Wilcox as our executive director. Carol was right there where the action was and worked as his right hand, keeping records, providing advice, and remembering important events as our history was established.

When I think of her early contribution, the word “perseverance” comes to mind. As our almost life long treasurer, she earned a reputation of being accurate with her records and providing wisdom in her advice. When Carol spoke, everyone listened, including Ken.

Most members don’t realize that Carol was unofficially “assistant editor” of the Trailhead News for about 20-years, proof reading, copying, collating, and stapling the monthly edition by hand.

Besides the many spring openers at Burke Lake and summer meetings at Haney Meadow, it has been my pleasure to have packed and camped with Carol in the Wilderness of Washington and Idaho. I enjoyed all of those trips and camping with Carol was a pleasant part of that experience.

Thank you Carol, for your perseverance, your work on our behalf, and your “Life Time Achievement!” You are truly a jewel to be recognized!
