The Superstitions Series is strongly related to my childhood. The stories that were passed
through generations and the folk tales of rural Kentucky life have all contributed to who I
am and the art that I produce. This is my way of embracing fallacies of the past by bringing
them to life and placing them in my own contemporary context—all the while, still passing
them on and carrying on the traditions of those before me.


Artist Bio:

Deirdre A. Scaggs is the Director of Archives at the University of Kentucky Libraries
Special Collections and Digital Programs. In addition to an MLIS, Scaggs holds an MFA
with a concentration in photography. She has exhibited nationally and her work is published
in +, Under +,: Up and Coming American Photographers. Scaggs is also the author of Women
in Lexington, a pictorial history.
