M13755.jpg

Yellowstone National Park, WY, USA

A close up of a bull elk who is starting to grow new antlers. Elk grow a new set of antlers every year. Larger bulls usually drop their old antlers by March sometime
and then begin growing new antlers which are covered by a skin that grows as the antlers grow. This skin has short hairs on it which is why it is called "velvet".
The velvet contain blood vessels that carry nutrients to the growing bone antlers.
