A Bee Assassin was waiting when a native bee landed in the plant. The bee is just visible behind the stamens of the Mariposa Lily.

Genus Apiomerus, probably A. crassipes, the Thick-legged Bee Assassin, common in California.

Could also be A. californicus -- the status of 20+ species in this genus is being revised.
