March 16

A new one
First posted shot with my new lens, straight out of the camera, no processing, no crop.

My new Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR arrived today.
I had waited and thought a long time about getting this lens, but really need a 400mm lens as 300mm was the longest I had and I shoot a lot at the Zoo and shots like this one.
This lens is the oldest VR = Vibration Reduction lens that Nikon makes and the only 400mm that can be used hand held.
So I went to La Jolla and gave it a try and must say I am pleased with it. Many reviews I read were very negative.
Among the complaints were that it was slow focusing, not very sharp and that it wasn't fast enough.
I wonder how many people who write about lenses actually walk around with them and try to shoot Pelicans flying by.
Oh, by the way, this isn't the best shot, I just picked it out from the thumbnails in Lightroom.

Nice and sharp, especially at the near wing tip where autofocus appears to have peaked.

Terrific shot Walter! Have fun with your new toy! :) I wish I had a 400mm lens too (my 300mm really struggles...)
