The spiral galaxy M-106 is a few degrees southeast of the Big Dipper's bowl. Many stargazers overlook this relatively bright galaxy which displays dark lanes and spiral arms through a large telescope. I took this photo with an unmodified Nikon D300 at ISO 1250 using a Sigma 500mm f/4.5 lens with a 2x teleconverter at Harrington Beach State Park on March 15, 2010. It is a layered combination of eight exposures of six minutes each. You can see six other much dimmer galaxies in this frame.
