The shamisen, a traditional Japanese three stringed instrument is roughly the equivalent of the American banjo.
The name means "three flavor strings" (© Wikipaedia) and is traditionally covered in animal skin similar to the Banjo. Cat's hide was a popular covering - watch out PETA.
