Hoot, Hoot by Dennis

A Powerful Owl I came across whilst walking along a trail in broad daylight. He was initially in a tree to my left about 10 feet away with a kill. I don't know who was more surprised but I shook so much that I failed to nail the focus. He flew to a nearby tree and I managed to grab a few more shots before he decided he had enough and flew away.

As per Miro's suggestion I have made a portrait crop. I had left the original uncropped to keep the image on theme using the tree branches/leaves for framing.

A Powerful Owl? I thought you were just being hugely descriptive! What an amazing bird. Now I know why there's a suggestion of facial discs. It does remind me of the hawk owl, but with a different-coloured beak. Anyhow, thanks for introducing us to this wonderful creature.

I like this shot. May I suggest you to make a portrait crop to get rid of white sky. Could look more dramatic.

Thanks for all the nice comments. The bird is a Powerful Owl (Ninox strenua) and is a species of owl native to south-eastern and eastern Australia, the largest owl on the continent.

Although my guess is a hawk, the feathering around the eyes seems quite owl-like, so I'm going to toss the northern hawk owl into the ring of possibilities. The beak ought to be more yellow, though. Anyhow, it's a terrific shot and the evergreen provides the perfect frame.

Excellent shot! I do believe that this one is a hawk though. Regardless owl or raptor, opportunity struck and you took it. Nicely done.

Yes, a great bird, and nicely framed. Seems that birds are ideal for this theme! (I was heading for one, too). Kleivis

Great shot Dennis! Your 'hoot hoot' looks like a 'hawk hawk' instead. It reminds me of our Redtail Hawks here but the eyes are very large and beautiful! Nicely framed by the branches too. He's such a pretty bird!
