On my way back to the parking lot I crossed the railway and returned back to Corkstown Road along the familiar Greenbelt Pathway. When crossing the railway I stopped to take this photo of what is known as Nepean Junction. The line heading off to the right is the endangered CN Beachburg Subdivision that connects Ottawa to Pembroke. This line could be torn up in the near future if the County of Renfew and Municipality of Pontiac are unable to purchase it.
The line at the left heading straight into the distance was once the CN Renfrew Subdivision. CN abandoned the Renfrew Subdivision east of Nepean Junction in the 1950s (the right-of-way was used to build the Queensway and the Watt’s Creek Pathway) and west of Arnprior in 1986 leaving only a small segment of track between Nepean Junction and Arnprior to serve the Nylene Canada plant on McNab Street in Arnprior. In 1993 CN abandoned the remaining segment of the Renfrew Subdivision, but the City of Ottawa stepped in and bought it. Eventually Nylene Canada, which requires rail access to its plant, became the owner of the line and that is the present situation. Someday I suspect the line will also be used for commuter rail between Ottawa and Kanata, Carp, and Arnprior.
