Potentially better lighting but you are too far away from the subject's face causing the metering system to overexpose - leading to blown highlights on the right. Most cameras can be set to show clipped histograms or blown highlights when they occur. Histograms can often be a better guide to picture characteristics on the camera's small LCD screen than a simple picture view. Again, you need to crop closer in order to make the background less important and the subject's head closer to the top of the frame.

i think i would have tried to remove the background junk by softening or making it darker.
