David, I am surprised to see you use your 50mm f/1.4! Of course it is a fantastic lens and on my D700 as I write this. My longest FX lens is the Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G and I have been mulling over what to get for longer focal lengths.
I would like to get the new 70-200 Nikkor, but it is heavy, long and pricey. Then, I read where it has what they call breath...it doesn't not give you true focal lenghts until you get out about 30 feet.
Since I shoot mostly portraits I would like something more like 135mm. But Nikon's lens at that focal length is old technology.
You nailed this focus..you are a risk taker as you have much more room for higher ISO's.
