While most of the action between stallions consists of a the dominant male defending his harem against a rival getting just a little to close, once in a while we had photographed very serious and sometimes bloody fights that lasted the entire day. The fight on this day was between the dominant Goldie and the big brown bachelor challenger. Though Goldie chased him off several times, the brown returned every time to the fight and seemed confident that he could win.

A few weeks later, the brown had won two mares from another stallion, but not from the palomino. Goldie has been able to keep his band of three mares for two years now. Somehow, Goldies band escaped the roundup and they are still in the desert. The big brown is gone.
