King of the Forest

I encountered nearly 30 individual deer this afternoon including this buck with a full rack of antlers. This buck was the only one with antlers and he was tied with another buck for the largest deer I encountered. I thought all of the bucks at this forest had shed their antlers - the last one I saw with a full rack was way back in early December - so meeting this buck was a surprise.

When this buck arrived on scene he announced his presence with an aggressive huff and then proceeded to browse one of the piles of feed after first charging at and then ousting the original browser. All the other deer stepped away when this buck approached. Even the other equally sized buck, though he tried to put up a bit of an argument when questioned, yielded to this buck. Only the human element in the situation intimidated this king of the forest. At least he was the king of the forest at that particular moment. I have seen larger bucks in this forest, one large enough to even intimidate this human element!

Wow!! Fantastic. I am a bit surprised that this guy still has his antlers. What a beauty he is.
