Beaver tracks

It was back to Mud Lake for me this morning, this time with an eye on thoroughly investigating the damage caused by the beaver and looking for prints. Here is one of only two clear markings in the snow I could find that were left by the beaver.

I am not sure where the beaver is living. I haven't found anything that could be a possible beaver lodge in the area north of the ridge. Maybe the beaver is living in the area around the yacht club where I can't go, or maybe it is living in the area at the east end of Mud Lake were I've been told beavers have lived before. There are logdge-like structures there. The beaver would have to swim a considerable distance under the ice to get there, though, and the trees along the river in that area and around most of the water purification plant property are undamaged as far as I know. The damage is concentrated in the area along the river directly north of the ridge and a bit to the east of the ridge.

Nice shot! I don't think I've ever seen beaver tracks before, though I saw a lot of gnawed-on trees in the swamp at the southeast corner of the lake last fall. Didn't see a lodge, though. There are photos in my blog if you're interested. I bet it's a good time to go exploring that area with the water all frozen over!
