In the cave - Kleivis
by kleivis

This is taken inside the caves in the former slavemarket in Zanzibar. Here slaves where kept for months before presented and sold and for the most part sent eastwards. It's calculated that 1 1/2 million slaves where sold from this market and a couple more likwise markets at the coast of nowadays Tanzania. It is also calculated that 9 out of 10 died before getting this far since they had to carry heavy and valuable loads like ivory on their way from inlands. Caravans which could take years.

Love the shot !
Show's there is beauty even in the most horrid places. (And that a camera lies all the time)

So many people ripped from their homes! So many hopeless solitudes piled in such a little space! I almost can hear their souls shouting. This is a very moving image, Trond.

This is a very moving picture and story. I visited a similar place in the Carribean and it still haunts me. I don't have it within me to fathom the magnitude of inhumanity that some of our fellow humans are capable of. I guess it's part of the legacy we have lived with since Cain and Abel.

Awwww, you got it fixed! Yes this is much nicer results. I loved the shot anyway ;o) Now it is even better. Good job.

This is a subtle kind of shot. The light falling into this gloomy place is, perhaps, a symbol of hope. Such a tragic history is lost on the cat whose only concern is for comfort. It sure makes a person think!

hmmmmmph! It is amazing how often I forget how luck I am. Great capture - really like the light (and the story)

Great capture. Even in despair there is can be light.

I saw a report about this place on CNN a few months back. What a sad sad place this is. As I recall there were marks on the walls or floors (trying to bring it up in my head) where the people had scratched into them. It was just horrible how the slaves were treated. Now, on to your photo... I love how you captured the light coming in to warm the cat. I hope the cat is only sleeping. I do notice you have a lot of hot pixels in the photo, a few dozen. I think it would be a more pleasing photo if they were removed. Regardless the scene is very good.
