Although the neo-Renaissance view suggests otherwise, this is a recent building, built between 1921 and 1928. The building was a gift from the American people to the city of Leuven after the original library from the 17th century located at Naamsestraat in August 1914 at the beginning of the First World War, was burned by the German occupiers. This was not only a great cultural heritage but also lost thousands of ancient and irreplaceable manuscripts with a priceless historical value. During the Battle of Leuven was on May 16, 1940 the University seriously damaged by a British-German artillery duel, in which almost the entire book collection (900,000 pieces) in flames. After the Second World War the building was almost completely restored according the original plans.

Alhoewel het neo-renaissance uitzicht anders doet vermoeden, is dit een recent gebouw, opgetrokken tussen 1921 en 1928. Het gebouw was een gift van het Amerikaanse volk aan de stad Leuven nadat de oorspronkelijke bibliotheek uit de 17de eeuw gelegen aan de Naamsestraat in augustus 1914 bij het begin van de Eerste Wereldoorlog, werd platgebrand door de Duitse bezetter. Hierdoor ging niet alleen een groots cultureel patrimonium verloren maar ook duizenden eeuwenoude en onvervangbare manuscripten met een onschatbare historische waarde. Tijdens de Slag om Leuven werd op 16 mei 1940 de Universiteitsbibliotheek zwaar beschadigd door een Brits-Duits artillerieduel, waarbij nagenoeg heel de boekencollectie (900.000 stuks) in vlammen opging. Nadien beschuldigen Duitsland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk elkaar van het plegen van deze feiten. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd het gebouw vrijwel volledig hersteld volgens de originele plannen.
