In this image you can see how close to the battery lights the gear lever would be if I turned the throttle up a bit more. I need to rethink that side for sure. My other bike has the basic Shimano gears that work just fine but what they do have is the indexing gear change lever that shows exactly what gear you are in. That was never a problem on a manual push bike but with electric assistance it isn`t always so clear exactly what gear your are in and a visual indicator definitely helps. I picked up a Shimano Tourney spare gear change handlebar lever set the other day, it is designed for 6 speed(which is what the rear mech is on this bike) so maybe a bit of experimenting might be in order. The Tourney gear shift seems to be used on a number of E bikes with twist throttle so probably will be a better bet.
