Duomo -under appreciated floor.jpg

The marble pavements in Italian churches are probably the most under-appreciated works of art in that country.
These laborate marble floors inlayed in geometric designs are found in churches throughout Italy.
The style was begun in Rome in the 13th century by the Cosmati family and spread to other churches throughout Europe.
Though Florence Cathedral's floors date after the Cosmati were working, the floors exhibit the type of inlay which they popularized.
