The Museo Borghese was originally a pleasure villa built by Cardinal Scipione Borghese in the mid 17th century.
The villa , recently restored to its original 17th c. appearance, is now a museum housing a substantial part of the original Borghese collection of paintings, sculpture, and antiquities
begun by Scipione Borghese, who built his villa for pleasure and relaxation.
Scipione Borghese was an early patron of Gianlorenzo Bernini and an avid collector of Bernini's early works
as well as those by Caravaggio, who is represented by a number of major paintings, along with those of Titian, Raphael, and other major artists.
The Museo Borghese is one of the most famous museums in Italy, and one of the major repositories of works by Bernini and Caravaggio.
It can be visited any day except Mondays, and requires timed entry reservations made in advance.
