Confusion reigns both in the nomenclature and taxonomical placement of this species.
The genus is generally referred to as Solomon's Seal (or Plume), or Solomon Seal, after
an eastern plant. Other names for the group include: Treacleberry, False Lily of the Valley,
and False Spikenard. Probably most useful and descriptive is "False Solomon's Seal."
The first part of the vernacular name, depending on the authority, can be either:
Fat (Corelli), Large or Feathery (Calphotos), or Branched (Peterson).
In addition, Jepson (2012) has moved this species to genus Maianthemum; further, it is no
longer a lily: Maianthemum is now placed in the separate family Ruscaceae. Wikipedia does
not give Ruscaceae family status; they place the genus in Asparagaceae. When the dust settles
I will build a gallery for Family Ruscaceae and make corresponding corrections to this gallery.
