October 1976 John Canose Photo

Edgewood, Maryland USA

Dear Mom Saloon (Dear Moms) was just outside the old Edgewood Arsenal gate. Across the road was the Amtrak station and the old Post Office. The little cul-de-sac that had an antique shop and a home or two has been scraped flat and is now a large parking lot for Amtrak. There is no trace of where Dear Moms once stood. "Pave paradise and put up a parking lot."

The group

Original Dear Moms owner Bobby Silvera, was sitting in the center of the steps with a dark mustache and his brother, Kenny Silvera, was sitting next to him with the white cowboy hat. In front is
Linda and her husband Dan, AKA "Fat Albert", in front of her. On the porch, top of stairs, with jean jacket, is Tom Bouton.

I tended bar at Dear Mom's from early 75 to late 78. I'm the guy resting his elbow on the left side railing. Other folks I remember are as follows: Guy wearing white hat is Bobby Lockhoff, he also worked here. Donny Hall is to the right of Bobby. Bill Heckrotte is leaning against the post on right side of porch. The fellow to his left leaning over is Merc. He was an Eskimo from Alaska, retired military I think. Merc used to sit at the bar doing crossword puzzles in 3 or 4 languages. He moved home and acted as a go between for the U.S. government and the Eskimo people. I saw his family name mentioned in National Geographic years later. The guy in front with the legs around him is Butch Ayres
I believe her name is Connie but forget her last name. Next to Butch is Billy Bond and behind him is Carol Hinschy. On Carol's right is Debbie Topping who dated Bobby Silvera one of the brothers who owned the joint. Behind Debbie is Michelle Labreque. On the far right holding the pooch is Frankie Kowalski.
The guy on the porch in the hat looking in my direction had the ability to pass out and bend over sideways so far his head would be below his knees and I never saw him fall.
I have only identified those who I remember with names. Those are others were ID'ed by other folks I did not comment on but love and miss them all. In a way Dear Mom's was a rite of passage for the Edgewood area back in that day. I apologize to anyone I missed or didn't ID correctly but as of this writing it's been 40 years. Time goes by but the memories are still vivid in my mind. It was one of the best times for all of us.
If anyone wishes, Email me. I'd like to hear from people.

Just the name "Dear Moms" reminds me of my late brother Johnny Thompson. He was a regular right along with Fat Albert and the rest of you old hippies:) Boy do I miss him!!

Danny Riley can tell you how took the photo, and when. He's the guy smoking on the bottom step with the hat on. He used to live near there until it was tore down. The guy in the "Fuck don't fight" shirt is Ron Anderson. Both still in the area. I have seen an actual photo mounted with a plastic backlight that can sit on a shelf. Kind of like a night light.

Wow what a great picture!!! My home away from home. Still think about when I hear Panama Red. Didn't they also do happy trails? Or was I drunk..... I think Dear Mom's was a right of passage, wasn't it? They had a reunion over at Pig Pen's in Abingdon - early 80's - and one out on the base one year. Do you know if they ever have any more reunions? Thanks so much for the memories.
