Adult nonbreeding Short-billed Dowitcher in front with adult nonbreeding Long-billed Dowitcher behind. Short-billed ID'd by the gray of head, neck and breast being more streaked/spotted than the solid gray of the Long-billed. Also note the spotting on the lower margin of the breast. Wing-tips on Short-billed extend just beyond the tail with two primary tips beyond the tertials while the wing tips on Long-billed fall just short of the tip-of-the-tail and are covered by the tertials. Upperparts paler than Long-billed and coverts have whitish fringing. Short-billed has thinner more distinct barring on the sides and flanks. Short-billed has a more slender body versus the pot-bellied look of Long-billed. When feeding in relaxed position note the rounded-bodied look of the Long-billed versus the slimmer and flatter-back look of the Short-billed.
