Visiting Waikamoi changed my perception of the amount of native bird habitat on Maui. We got this view of the coast from a ridge in upper Waikamoi. I was amazed by how close the coast was, which means there isn't much native bird habitat - those lower elevations are inhospitable to the native forest birds. For comparison, when I'm at this elevation on Mauna Loa the cost is about 20 miles away and seldom visible.
