"Hosmer's Grove"

Halemau'u Trail, Haleakala N.P.

"Hosmer's Grove" (one of many) is an alien conifer and eucalyptus plantation planted on deforested land 100 years ago to stabilize the watershed after unrestrained grazing had severely damaged the North slope of Haleakala. There are still pockets of native vegetation in steep gulches that native birds can use, but the alien trees are lost habitat. Much of the plantations are within The Nature Conservancy's Waikamoi Preserve, and over the next few decades some native reforestation will be attempted. The subalpine scrub in the foreground is within Haleakala National Park, and is mostly native vegetation, providing habitat for native creatures. The hill on the left is Pu'u Nianiau, and perhaps Pu'u Lu'au on the right. 100 years ago the Pu'u Nianiau area was notable for its rare and interesting native plants. Unfortunately grazing exterminated them all and now it's only populated by weeds, communication towers and radars.
