Snapping Turtle

Crawford Lake Conservation Area

Look at those claws! They are really sharp. Snappers have a small plastron (breast plate) that leaves much of their under side unprotected. As a result, they will fight to protect themselves and are dangerous if pulled from the water. A big one like this could easily amputate one's hand. They are not aggressive in the water, and will swim away from people.
