Scoring

Oak_Michael Bush 4-yard run (Sebastian Janikowski kicks PAT), 3:13

Notes:

- Raiders come up with huge stop at end of first quarter, with Greg
Ellis stripping LaDainian Tomlinson after a shovel pass and Michael Huff
recovering. Darren Sproles had returned kickoff following Raider TD 66
yards.

Richard Seymour had a sack on the drive and another tackle.

Raiders fans think they’ve got themselves a team.

– Who remembers 2006? Or 2008. The Raiders drove 84 yards in 10 plays,
with a 30-yard Russell to Miller hookup and featuring the running of
McFadden and Bush. The two runners have rushed for 76 yards in two
drives and the Chargers are on their heels.

– Nice opening defensive series, three-and-out, Rivers misses Gates on
third-and-5. Seymour in on all three plays. Brown for Morrison on third
down.

– The Raiders had a promising opening drive come up empty when Russell
locked in on Louis Murphy with Quintin Jammer recording an interception
near the goal line and returning it to the 29-yard line. Bush and
McFadden had rushed for 35 yards on four carries.

Scoring

SD_LaDainian Tomlinson 1-yard run (Nate Kaeding kicks PAT), 4:45.

Oak_Sebastian Janikowski 37-yard field goal, :40

SD_Kaeding 47-yard field goal, :00

Notes:

– Darren Sproles had his second big return following Janikowski’s field
goal, racing 59 yards to the Oakland 41.

Rivers got the Chargers in range for a 47-yard field goal by Kaeding for
a somewhat deflating 10-10 tie after Oakland had outgained San Diego 217-74.

– JaMarcus Russell got a classic two-minute opportunity to close out the
half, with Oakland starting at the 36 with 2:23 left following a 65-yard
Mike Scifres punt and 14-yard return by Johnnie Lee Higgins.

He had key completions to Louis Murphy and Zach Miller, nearly had a
pass picked that went directly to Steven Cooper, but fired a bullet to
Murphy for a 19-yard TD with 19 seconds left in front of Steve Gregory.

Except the TD was nullified on by the officials on replay, who said
Murphy lost possession on the way down. Looked from here like he caught
the ball, both feet hit ground, and THEN lost possession. Sebastian
Janikowski kicks 37-yard FG with 40 seconds left.

– Shane Lechler’s 55-yard punt, with Trevor Scott dumping Sproles at the
13, gave San Diego the ball with 3:36 to play in the half with 87 yards
to go.

– Darrius Heyward-Bey, who had a drop erased by penalty in the first
quarter, let one bouncer off his chest and hands in the second quarter.
Russell missed Louis Murphy on a third-and-5 slant to force the first
Raiders punt at 3:50.

– Raiders open next series with Samson Satele at center, Chris Morris at
left guard. PA announcer says return is questionable with back injury.

– San Diego converts turnover for touchdown with help from 24-yard
Rivers-to-Gates strike to the 1-yard line. Finishes 45-yard drive in
seven plays.

On back-to-back plays, Tyvon Branch flattened Brandon Manumaleuna for a
2-yard loss on a screen and Chris Johnson unloaded on Darren Sproles on
the next play for no gain. The crowd was howling, quieted by Rivers’ strike.

– Illegal contact foul on Chargers gives Raiders one first down, Russell
hits Miller for 17 yards for another. Drive ends on McFadden fumble _
the Raiders second turnover. They still haven’t punted.

Robert Gallery is injured on play, a concern considering Paul McQuistan
is inactive.

No scoring

Notes:

– JaMarcus Russell found his security blanket Zach Miller for a gain to
the 41, then Johnnie Lee Higgins took a reverse to the 21-yard line as
the quarter ended. Russell was a lead blocker, pushing back safety Eric
Weddle.

– Chargers forced to punt again after three-and-out, Greg Ellis sacking
Rivers, with Richard Seymour helping to collapse the pocket. Fans loving
the defensive effort, growing impatient with offense. With third quarter
winding down, Chargers have just 152 yards and have worked for every one
of them.

— Chargers melting down, faced third-and-30 after a taunting penalty and
false start. Mike Scifres punts. Game just waiting for Raiders to take
it over.

– Russell drew some boos for misfiring on a third-and-5 pass to a wide
open Darrius Heyward-Bey after Oakland started a possession on its own
48. Three-and-out.

– Chargers are seriously hurting up front with G Louis Vasquez and now C
Nick Hardwick out with injuries. Raiders force a three-andout and get
possession at the 48 following 19-yard return by Johnnie Lee Higgins of
Mike Scifres bomb.

– Raiders opened with their worst series of the game. Three-and-out, two
incompletions not near anyone by Russell. Second one under pressure.

– Huge stop by Raiders on opening series. With Rivers heating up,
Michael Huff picked off a pass which deflected off the hands of Antonio
Gates and returned it 10 yards to the 38. Score would have given
Chargers considerable momentum following events that ended the first half.

Scoring

Oak_Sebastian Janikowski 34-yard field goal, 13:01

SD_Vincent Jackson 15-yard pass from Philip Rivers (Nate Kaeding kicks
PAT), 7:22

Oak_Louis Murphy 57-yard pass from JaMarcus Russell (Janikowski kicks PAT).

SD_Darren Sproles 5-yard run (Kaeding kicks PAT), :18.

Notes:

– Sproles scores from the 5 as San Diego gains 166 yards in its last two
drives. The Chargers had 152 yards total offense before those two drives.

– Too much time left on the clock, Rivers quickly completes three
straight passes to the Raiders 32 before Scott pressures him into an
incompletion with 1:38 left. Already in range for Kaeding FG attempt.

– Fourth-and-14, Russell to Murphy 57 yards. Man, what a blown coverage.
Place goes nuts.

– On third-and-15, JaMarcus Russell threads the needle to Johnnie Lee
Higgins, who takes fercious hit from Eric Weddle, ball comes out
incomplete. Fourth-and-14, 2:41 left.

– Russell sacked by Ogemdi Nwagbuo (conventional spelling), took quick
look to his right, didn’t see rush, lost seven yards. Third-and-15 at
the 43.

– Big break for Raiders, illegal hands to face on Shaun Phillips turns
third-and-12 into first down after play came up short. Russell returns
in place of Gradkowski.

– Third-and-3 penalty, Cornell Green false start, turns it into
third-and-8 at the 42-yard line with 3:57 left.

– JaMarcus Russell injured a leg on a third-and-1 keeper for a first
down, with Gradkowski coming in.

– San Diego finally punctured the Raiders defense with a 77-yard,
10-play drive which featured the first real breakdowns of the game by
Oakland.

Jackson got loose behind Nnamdi Asomugha with Rivers throwing a perfect
pass toward the left end zone, with Stanford Routt arriving late with a
leap. The big defensive breakdown _ leaving Darren Sproles all by
himself in the middle on third-and-12 for a 15-yard gain to the 16-yard
line.

– The Raiders drove 51 yards into the red zone but were forced to settle
for a field goal when Russell’s third-down pass to Miller went for just
two yards.

It was disappointing in that a touchdown could have seized momentum,
perhaps for good. Russell is out of synch with every receiver except
Miller at this point.

Here is referee Carl Cheffer’s response when asked by a pool reporter
why Louis Murphy’s 15-yard touchdown reception late in the first half
was overturned:

Cheffers: We had a situation where the receiver caught the pass in the
air and as he is coming down to the ground, he is actually going to the
ground. That’s a defined term in our rule book, a player, a receiver who
is going to the ground. The rule book says, if a player goes to the
ground in the act of catching a pass, with or without contact by
opponent – so that can be on his own; In this case, he got hit by an
opponent – he must maintain control of the ball after he touches the
ground, whether in the field of play or in the end zone. If he loses
control of the ball, and the ball touches the ground before he regains
control, the pass is incomplete. If he regains control prior to the ball
touching the ground, the pass is complete. That wasn’t the case. What we
ruled, what we saw in replay, was that he was going to the ground, as he
came down the ball came loose, he lost control of the ball, the ball
skidded along the ground, he eventually completely lost control of the
ball. So, by rule, by what we saw in review, it’s an incomplete pass.

Q: So, this has nothing to do with him having both feet down – it has
nothing to do with that, it has nothing to do with making a football
move? It’s just what you said there?

Cheffers: Yeah, he was up, I think if I remember, (on) one foot, he was
getting contacted prior to his second foot coming down. By definition in
our rule book, he’s going to the ground and has to maintain possession
of the ball throughout the entire act of the catch. And in this case, he
lost possession and the ball hit the ground. Therefore, it’s incomplete.

Q: It was pretty clear-cut?

Cheffers: Pretty clear-cut.

News, notes and quotes from the Raiders’ 24-20 loss to the San Diego
Chargers at the Coliseum:

– Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha was having difficulty reconciling the way
they played defense for three quarters before the Chargers controlled
the fourth quarter.

“It was like two completely different games with what we did in the
beginning and those last drives when they started throwing and doing
that stuff,” Asomugha said. “We were good with the run and good with the
pass and then in the fourth quarter we had a couple of breakdowns.
That’s what hurt us.”

– Coach Tom Cable thought the defense played it to loose over the last
two drives.

“We were playing off, maybe a little bit too soft,” Cable said. “Rivers
did a nice job in using his backs. An I think that was really the
difference in the last two drives.”

Asomugha doesn’t think the Raiders would approach it any differently
next time, just do it better.

“For the majority of the game we were just palyihg tight out there.
During a situation like that you don’t want to play tight on them
because that’s when they’re going to do those crossing routes on you and
pick you,” Asomugha said. “So we tried to go into more of a zone effect
and see if that would work.

“I think that’s what any team would do in that situation. For it not to
work out, you obviously can’t beat yourself over the head. If we did it
again, we’d probably be doing calls similar to what we did in that last
two minutes.”

– “We left a lot of plays out there and we let some things get away from
us, but the best thing to do about that is get ready for Kansas City
because we’ve got a short week,” Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

– “We’re going to be a much better football team than people think. I am
not afraid to say that. I was not afraid to say that when I took this
job. We still have some work to do. We’re not there yet. Thats a heck of
a football team and and we had a chance to get them,” Cable regarding
the future of the team.

The Raiders weren’t the only team insisting they are on the verge of
turning the corner.

“Yeah, they aren’t the same team,” tight end Antonio Gates said. “They
have guys that want to win and play hard. I’ll tell you what _ it was a
battle . . . they played their hearts out.”

– Both rookie wide receiver Louis Murphy and Cable were surprised to see
a 15-yard touchdown play overturned at the end of the first half.

“I had no idea I lost the ball, honestly. I came down, and when I was
pushing myself up, that’s the only time I really felt the ball come out,
when I was getting up to celebrate,” Murphy said. “It is what it is. All
my teammates said they thought it was a touchdown. Both feet and my rear
end land in the end zone.”

Said Cable: “He came down with both feet then his rear end hit the
ground, and then the ball came out when he hit the ground. I thought if
you came down with the ball in possession it was a touchdown, but he
said he had to take it all the way to the ground with the ball secure. I
don’t believe that is the rule, but we’ll see.”

– The Raiders were 6-for-8 converting third downs in the first half and
only 1-for-6 in the second half.

– Strong safety Tyvon Branch had nine tackles, one tackle for loss and a
pass defensed, while Chris Johnson had eight stops and two passes
defensed. Both players were standouts until the final two drives when
most everyone in the secondary was victimized.

– Russell left briefly with a shin injury in the second half, giving way
to Bruce Gradkowski, but returned to throw the 57-yard TD pass to
Murphy. He said he is fine.

– Wide receiver Johnnie Lee Higgins was the target of five passes and
caught none, taking a ferocious lick from Eric Weddle late in the game
to dislodge one catch. He did not finish the game.

– Guard Robert Gallery injured his back and left for a few series but
returned to finish the game.

– Huge upgrades at both end spots in veterans Richard Seymour and Greg
Ellis. Seymour had two sacks, Ellis one.

Linebacker Thomas Howard said all the Raiders did in preparation for the
game with Seymour was talk to him about certain roles. They kept it
simple and Seymour played most of the game, pushing the pocket on
several occasions when he didn’t reach the quarterback.
