The words of the Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson, are chiseled in stone within the Jefferson Monument in Washington D.C.
as are the words...
"ALMIGHTY GOD HATH CREATED THE MIND FREE"
Especially after having stood in the Jefferson Memorial, and seeing for myself the words inscribed there, it's impossible for me to accept the characterization that Jefferson (and the rest of the founders) were a bunch of Atheists.
Personally, I believe Jefferson was a Christian; but I observe he was careful to leave the discovery of that self-evident path - to the FREE INDIVIDUAL. This is an important concept embodied within our 1st amendment, and our Republic; and it is a concept that has often been confused in the discussion about "Separation between church and state".
