We had a 450 mile drive between Cooke City and Glacier National Park. Thanks to high speed limits and some varied, interesting terrain it actually wasn't too bad. We grabbed a campsite at St. Mary campground and would stay there for the duration of our stay in Glacier National Park.
First night in the tent was a little rough (Norah woke up at 3 am crying and then was fascinated by the full moon and didn't want to go back in the tent, much less back to sleep). Despite the rocky start, we were ready for our first hike in Glacier. It was overcast as we drove the Going to the Sun Road to Logan Pass where we intended to hike the Highline Trail. It was completely socked in at the pass and we loitered for a bit to see if it would clear, but it looked doubtful. One of the rangers recommended trying something around Many Glacier so we loaded up and drove to Many Glacier. The weather was better there and we decided to hike to Iceberg Lake (9.5 miles round trip). It was a pleasant, gradual ascent over open slopes and through the forest before arriving at Iceberg Lake.
