President Roosevelt suffered polio as an adult. During his term in office, the press pretty much adhered to the President's request not to photograph him in his wheelchair, thinking it might make him look weak and ineffective as a leader. When designing the Roosevelt Memorial, initially there was no reference to his disability, but after protests by disability advocates this statue was added to the memorial.
